I drive a lot. My family lives between 5 and 10 hours away. The thing is, it doesn't matter if you're driving long distances or just a mile...if you fall asleep, it could happen anytime, anyplace. I think that I've dosed off more on short drives. When I'm driving long distance, I think I'm more prepared. I never drive unmedicated, or first thing in the morning. I make frequent stops, listen to audio books and sometimes I geocache along the way. I also know my limits. I know when it's time to pull over and nap or even get a room. My family checks in on me ever so often and I make sure that when I stop to rest, they know where I am and I'm very aware of my surroundings. You have to know yourself and be aware of what's going on around you.

We are fortunate in that our children and their families live near us. My wife's only sibling lives nearby, as well. My siblings & families live away.
My travel tip - since both you & I are narcoleptics, certain ... arrangements must be made. My wife is my driver on trips longer than 1 hour. She likes driving - except city driving. Anyhow, my tips:
□ Avoid travelling alone - ya never know when a friend will be needed;
□ take your (prescribed) "stay awake" medicine. Nodding off while behind the wheel is Deadly;
□ No alcohol- meds & alcohol ... deadly;
□ Pay Attention to your surroundings & your dashboard. Avoiding your responsibilities ... Deadly!
Have a great holiday.
