Will I Always Have EDS?

A MyNarcolepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I’m sleeping longer at night on xywav but wake up several times still. Will I ever get enough quality sleep to not doze when sitting for a bit?

Jullie2: Wow, just wanted to say, what u previously said was not only very insightful & thought-provoking, it was quite "entertaining" too! That is, u have an obvious style, a flair, for writing that ensures ur point(s) are conveyed in a clear & concise manner (& I love that😃); in fact, I agree 100% with everything u said; for me, personally, I've been dealing with these issues for 10+ years, as there's just so many different ways to cope, manage & adjust & STILL have a great life! One just has to find the right med, if applicable, the right tips, ideas &/or lifestyle change(s) that works for them & only them; it's there; we just have to find 'em!🤓🇺🇸

Jullie, I still write long emails and grit my teeth. Now I sleep around 6 - 6 1/2 hours a night. I find if I am up early and busy I can go through the morning without a nap. As soon as we have lunch, I’m already dozing. However, if I sit down around 7AM, I doze off and on for an hour or so. A third nap time is after supper while we’re watching tv. I doze while writing recipes to try. My letters get very small and floating away on the page, even hard for me to read. I’m resigned to EDS , Much easier now that I’m retired. I’ve known I had narcolepsy since a night and day in the sleep lab.I thought there was no way I’d be able to fall asleep right after getting up from a night of sleep. Surprise! I went to sleep during the calibration of the equipment - didn’t even make it to the test. I did 4 tests, with short times to get to sleep so they sent me home, saying they had enough information.
I feel more rested when I get up in the morning. I’m hopeful that someday I will get enough rest at night so I can drive us somewhere beside doctors' offices or grocery store for pleasure. My husband watches me while I drive and if my eyes close, he tells me to open them. So far that works on 30 minute rides.

I’ll be anxious to hear about your experiences.

RJB, Thanks for your answer. I do have OSA, along with RLS. It seems there are several conditions that group together with narcolepsy. I’m glad I’m retired now because it would be difficult to be alert enough to keep a classroom of students learning and participating. I’ve taken armodafinil and Sunosi at separate times. I refused to take sunosi because of side effects (caused ADHD symptoms, talked constantly, flitted from one activity to another but never finishing one before moving on, groggy all the time while taking it).

I’m now on xywav and wake much less during the night. I usually fall asleep easily when I awaken.

If you’re still waking several times a night & sleepy during the day, you may have also developed sleep apnea. I have both and sleep with a bipap. Rarely I wake during the night, usually because of a bizarre dream but not very often. Strange, vivid dreams are associated with both conditions.
