Is Anyone Depressed?

A few days ago the psychiatrist told me that I have been depressed for about a year and that I have borderline personality disorder. The sleep specialist said it is normal for people with narcolepsy to become depressed. I sleep all the time, I can't get up in the morning, I feel sleepy while working. When I come home after work, I want to sleep immediately. The psychiatrist said my desire to sleep after work had something to do with depression. I began to confuse symptoms of narcolepsy and… read more

I have also been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. I definitely feel depressed a lot of the time. I feel that I go on and out of depression. Its hard sometimes as I have so much to live for and to be happy about but sometimes it’s hard to be happy even when I don’t feel depressed. Sometimes it feels like life just goes in a circle , everyday is the same thing over and over again but my advice would be to always try to give yourself something to look forward to that has helped me not feel like life is just a repeating daily cycle, keep your head up I have read that the imbalance in our brain controls mood as well and it is not rare to have depression with narcolepsy. We have to stay strong , and try to stay positive. If you ever have a chance check out my new book on Amazon called “ the journey beneath her heavy feet- A memoir on narcolepsy and motherhood.”

It's very common to have depression as a comorbitity because it's a very difficult situation to be in and sleeping so much can be depressing in and of itself.

HOWEVER, I would caution anyone to allow any doctor to "blame" or explain away your N symptoms on depression. That happened to me in 2009, 2012, and 2013, and I ended up not being diagnosed or treated properly for my N until 2016 when I was originally diagnosed with IH. That was because I finally had a primary who listened to me and I insisted on getting a sleep study done.

Often times we need to be our best advocates for ourselves and our conditions. If you feel something is off and you're not happy with a healthcare provider's diagnosis or excuse, keep pushing or find a new provider.

Not quite certain if I've ever been officially diagnosed with depression. Though I will say (for myself) and I'm sure this goes for others with Narcolepsy as well, the fact is....
Our daily lives revolve around prescription medication. For myself I'll say, for the last Several Years my prescribed medication has Not Been Available on any Consist Basis At All. Well to be fair, maybe 2 months in a row!
So YES it is very depressing to know each day could possibly be/or could have been somewhat more "normal/productive"...and yet we Cannot Obtain the Medication that we Need to do so. 😏😴
