Need Reassurance

A MyNarcolepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Oklahoma City, OK

I was diagnosed in January. I'm having a hard time understanding how this happened. My anxiety tells me that it's not narcolepsy at all and something far worse. My doctor did the extensive and expensive sleep test on me in Dec. 2021 but I just still don't understand. Also, I was reading that having narcolepsy can make you wake up all the time during your sleep at night, I don't have that problem AT ALL. Once I'm asleep for the night, I'm OUT. Which is concerning because I have two small… read more

Do You Find That Caffeine Helps You?

A MyNarcolepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Idaho Falls, ID

I basically live off energy drinks to keep me awake... but honestly I feel like it’s more of a placebo effect than the caffeine doing the job. Now I have kidney stones! So, obviously, energy drinks are BAD. I don’t know what else to do! I’m already on modafinil, but it doesn’t seem to be very effective.

i can drink a pot of coffee and fall asleep in no time.

What Bits Of "advice" Do You Wish People Would Stop Telling You?

A MyNarcolepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
San Francisco, CA
A MyNarcolepsyTeam Member

I just wish they would stop saying they understand. It's always followed by some stupid advice. They understand as much as I understand what it's like for a woman to be pregnant.

What Supplements Do You Take?

A MyNarcolepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Newark, DE

I do not take meds. To pursue the doctor route I would have to give up my license and be told I'm wrong until proven right. So I do caffiene. A lot of caffiene. I know there are others in my boat but in many casses people have said they take supplements. The caffeine is killing me. I consume on a good day 1200mg and on a bad day 3000mg of caffeine. Are there supplements I can take to take it's place or at least cut it back?

A MyNarcolepsyTeam Member

OK - 1200mg Ceylon Cinnamon OTC for diabetes type 2. Turmeric Curcumin 500mg OTC for inflammation & immune system support for narcolepsy and ankylosing Spondylitis (AS). Two script. meds for… read more

Do You Have A Hobby That Brings You So Much Joy You Forget You Have Narcolepsy?

A MyNarcolepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
San Diego, CA

Maria & I have been nerding out about the beautiful rocks and crystals we've found (aka: Rockhounding). I hike & rockhound the beach 3-4 times a week. It motivates me to get some exercise and wakes me up in the afternoon when my symptoms are at their highest. Besides Rockhounding, I metal detect and create Bonsai Tree sculptures out of wire and the rocks I find. What's your hobby?

A MyNarcolepsyTeam Member

I wouldn't call that a hobby but definitely an activity worth doing. Sounds very cataplectic. Maybe a hobby that requires you to be laying on the ground...like sidewalk chalk art or a sport like Luge… read more

Treatment For Narcolepsy Without Diagnosis

A MyNarcolepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Fitzgerald, GA

Has anyone ever in the past been told by a doctor they think you have narcolepsy and put you on meds for narcolepsy. This happened to me years ago. Just wondering if anyone has ever been diagnosed with narcolepsy with a physicitrist when you told them all of your chronic health issues . Mine ask alot of questions about all my disorders and concluded that I did have narcolepsy in his judgment because as a child the mental issues I had up until adulthood was linked to narcolepsy. Physicitrist if… read more

Nuvigil- Will I For Sure Eventually Need To Add Medications?

A MyNarcolepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Overland Park, KS

I have read many stories online of people doing well on Nuvigil for awhile, but then as time goes on having to add a "booster" medication halfway through the day. I want to know if I should expect this, or not. Has anyone been on Nuvigil for a long time with no decrease in effectiveness? Some sources also suggest taking a couple days off the medicine to curb resistance. Has anyone had experience with that?

A MyNarcolepsyTeam Member

I have taken Nuvigil & Adderall for around 12+ years now. They both work good still, but it also depends on what I'm doing that day & how active I am. Also it doesn't matter sometimes if I've taken… read more
