Do Stimulants Help?

A MyNarcolepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

When I was first diagnosed beginning of high school, my doctor had me try a couple different treatments. One of them was Ritalin, but I was wary of pills and didn't want to go that route. College has really been testing my limits, and I'm starting to fall behind. Do stimulants help any of you guys? Which kinds help the most? Do side effects outweigh the pros? Thank you!

I have had to be on nuvigil and then modafinel both of which did not work at full dose then I was put on Adderall am now taking full dose 30mg 2 times a day and that helps but not fully and now I'm on 150 mg sonosi and with the Adderall it helps but I believe because of past illigal stimulant use I have a high tolerance so that's why it stops working so quickly for me also the modafinil leaves me with the same kind of face "tweeks" that methamphetamine does so s
When.on it everyone thought I was using again.

Hi, I’m new here but unfortunately not to Narcolepsy! I was diagnosed about 15-18years ago after I became a Psg technician(Polysomnogram/sleep) working in sleep centers. I work dialysis now FT but still do sleep studies for sleep disorder breathing and MSLT for narcolepsy. I was started on Provigil from the beginning, from 100mg to the max which lasted about 4 years then I started on Ritalin 10mg until I hit max at 60mg. This worked for a few years, and thankfully Nuvigil came out and so for a while the Nuvigil 1 1/2 q day, 20mg Ritalin TID and in past couple years have added 150mg Wellbutrin. This works the best (geez it should) but sadly I can still go to sleep any time anywhere. I do have a crazy work schedule that exacerbates my symptoms oh and I had hysterectomy April 2019 and my hormones hit the dirt as well as there me into menopause, not that I wasn’t on my way anyhow so now I also have Biomedical hormone pellets implanted under the skin every 3 months unless booster is needed I’m between. So I should feel like a million bucks and be able to function pretty well awake but sadly I could still sleep the day away and it sucks!

Well I will let y'all know that Doctors are doctors not all of them have a clue. They are the only group of professionals that get paid to practice.
Speaking of doctors, I have found that you might have to remind your doctor that he works for you. If he/she refuses to give you what you need, there are a thousand other ones out there. I know it's a joke sometimes to spend the money to go see a doctor. I had to convince my sleep doctor to do more than just let me be exhausted all the time.
In reference to the question...
I have used just about all of the meds...I'm currently using ADDERALL twice a day. One when I get up second about 1pm. This is the only way to function. I did just recently have them up the dosage. Without the medication I can't function through a whole day.
Prior to my diagnosis I used energy drinks. There are so many on the market that I don't like. I found one that didn't taste horrible and didn't give me a crash at the end. It's called RIP IT ironically the best place to buy it is Dollar tree if you have one.
I will say that I don't recommend using a stimulant medicine and a energy drink at the same time. But if nothing else helps you can try them the worst thing it'll do is as one person said in the comments send your blood pressure through the roof.

Really hope this helps. God bless!
