I Need Medication Advise

A MyNarcolepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I’ve been taking 15mg of adderall 3 times a day. Most of the time it works, I just hate the crash at the end of the day and I feel like it changes my personality. My Dr. Called in Sunosi but my pharmacy has to order it. She says I can just take Sunosi and stop adderal. Has anyone tried this? I’m afraid I’ll have adderal withdrawal. I’m afraid it won’t work. Neither modafinil or armodifinl worked for me. I hate figuring out what works to keep me awake during the day. Any advise is greatly… read more

First, consider this: your modafinal and armodafinal failed because it didn't give you the clarity and sharpness you were expecting. Perhaps your expectations were assigned incorrectly!

Let me explain: When I take one of those two drugs, I do not expect it to make me sharp as a tack, but I DO expect it to keep me awake. Talk With your doctor about dosages and dcheduled times to take the modafinal or armodafinal.

I count on the Adderalls, Ritalins, Methamphetamines and Vyvanses for the sharpness of thought that I believe all Narcoleptics crave. Understand that these potent helpers for your mind also have a time limit, and take them when you NEED them. I can take my Vyvanse in the morning and afternoon and know that I have 6 sharp hours in me. If I have a night meeting or function to attend, I will swap the afternoon dose with a nap and take the second Vyvanse about an hour before the event that I want to be sharp for.

I don't think that doctors manage this way, but in essence, by taking that jolt of clarity when you need it most, we are learning to cope with our disease in a good, safe way.

I have had times when I've felt a need for a "third" dose. What works for me is a dose of 5- hour energy, available practically everywhere. With it, there is no horrible crash - you simply wind down somewhere during hour 5. Way better than risking a shortage of your mind uppers during the day.

I may not have struck a chord for you --- it DOES seem to play out this way for me. Bottom line, talk with your doctor about your concerns and needs and KEEP talking until you have all the information that you need. Sleep doctors DO UNDERSTAND WHAT NARCOLEPSY DOES AND HOW IT AFFECTS PEOPLE DIFFERENTLY. I have yet to find anyone better equipped to help me deal with my Narcoleptic struggles. Good luck!

Hello Angie! I only have experience with Modafinil, Armodafinil, Adderall, Ritalin (methylphenidate), dextroamphetamine, and Desoxyn (methamphetamine). Yes, there is a prescription methamphetamine, but I don't know of any health plans that will pay for it- and it's very expensive. Anyway- tried all these and didn't tolerate some very well, after a few years finally settled on Ritalin, which worked for +/- 3yrs, then stopped working and just made me feel ill. Now using dextroamphetamine, which I take the number of tablets as I feel I need to 'wake up' in the morning. Then after a few hours I feel it wearing off so dose myself again
ASAP. I'm getting pretty good at gauging how many I need and when, so as to not take any too late which might keep me awake. Mine's not a time release, long acting med, so I can control it better than say, Modafinil. There is a LOT of trial and error with narcolepsy meds- what works for some won't for others.
BTW- I've read numerous research studies from the NIH and curiously, they've shown that most narcoleptics apparently do not have a propensity for getting addicted to the amphetamine meds! No addiction, no withdrawal.
Best wishes, Jeff4

Sunosi works differently than modafinil and armodafinil and adderall. These are all stimulants while Sunosi is a DNRI (dopamine norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor). I do not know about the withdrawal but I'd suggest giving it some time and don't be hard on yourself. If you're concerned, talk to your doctor and don't let them be dismissive. Hope this helps.
